DC FIRE HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
What started in the early ’90s as a few D.C. firefighters getting together for pickup hockey games has grown into something much bigger. By 1999, there was enough passion and talent to form the D.C. Fire Hockey Team — a group made up predominantly of firefighters and officers from the District of Columbia Fire Department.
For years, the team competed in adult leagues around the area before joining forces with other police and fire departments in 2016 to create the Maryland Heroes Hockey League — a league made up entirely of public safety hockey teams. Today, that league continues to thrive, and the D.C. Fire Hockey Team still hits the ice in tournaments and charity games across the U.S. and Canada, using the sport they love to raise funds for meaningful causes.
One of those causes is their own signature event — the D.C. Fire Hockey Tournament.
Held each spring at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, Maryland, the tournament brings together two dozen public safety teams — firefighters, police officers, and first responders — for a weekend of competitive play and community spirit.
Proceeds from the tournament directly benefit the D.C. Firefighters Burn Foundation, supporting burn survivors, their families, and the professionals who care for them.
Admission is free and spectators are encouraged to come cheer on their local heroes as they take the ice for a cause that goes far beyond the scoreboard.
