On July 29, 2009, the rehabilitation gym at The Burn Center at Washington Hospital Center was officially named “The Firefighters Rehabilitation Gym”. The name was announced during a ceremony to thank firefighters for raising money to pay for the gym’s renovation.

The DC Firefighters Burn Foundation and unions representing firefighters in the District, Montgomery County, and Prince George’s County raised more than $100,000 to upgrade The Burn Center’s rehabilitation gym. The money paid for new furniture, equipment, and construction design to help burn patients heal and resume daily living activities. Some of the new features include: a 42-inch flat-screen television with Wii gaming system, space-saver parallel bar system, range of motion therapy devices, and new exercise equipment.

“The firefighters have been tremendous supporters of The Burn Center over the years, and we felt it was only appropriate to name the gym in their honor, “ said Marion Jordan, MD, director of The Burn Center. “So many firefighters have taken a personal interest in what we do here, from the care to the research, and their efforts have helped us to get the resources needed to make this one of the best burn units in the country.”

Over the past two years, the DC Firefighters Burn Foundation has donated more than $85,000 for the rehab department of The Burn Center.
